Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from skipper Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made those words in multiple interviews following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

However, following the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation after England suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead after three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
