The US Justice Department have officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to block the state's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, submitted to federal court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, investigations and possible further challenges.
