A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major government projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” stated the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in national projects. They were completed at an rapid pace, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled ongoing concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party urged an urgent suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was proposed pending a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these strategic projects.
